Excitement mounts over LHC announcement

Scientists are expected to reveal key findings in the hunt for the highly coveted Higgs boson particle.
The findings are set to be revealed on Tuesday at a seminar in Geneva at which scientists will present an update on their progress. While they won't have enough information to formally claim a discovery, it is thought that the Higgs boson particle might have been glimpsed during their experiments. "It is a fantastic time at the moment, you can feel people are enthusiastic," said senior scientist Dr Christoph Rembser.
Scientists are widely expected to present evidence on Tuesday that the most coveted prize in particle physics - the Higgs boson - has been glimpsed.

So simply discovering the Higgs boson doesn't prove that the Higgs mechanism is how matter gains mass, only gauge bosons We believe the Higgs field responsible for endowing virtually all the matter we know about with mass. so what happens when we find the higgs, and what's it going to be used for. except that we would learn how things form out of the unknown... not much I guess

So, where exactly do Higgs Bosons come from, what makes them create the Higgs field, why do certain particles react to it but others not, how do they know whether they're supposed to react or not, and why did the universe come up with the Higgs Bosons in the first place? Did it know, before it was born, that if it comes into existence without Higgs Bosons it wouldn't live long? Why is everything perfectly in place and why is it that every time we find an answer it gives birth to 1000 new questions? Is the complexity of the Universe never-ending?

...and why did the universe come up with the Higgs Bosons in the first place? Neat post. I think the Higgs field creates Higgs Bosons. Every field seems to have a need to create a particle for itself. Maybe it's an ego thing. For instance, an electron is supposed to be an excitation of the electromagnetic field. I'd like to know what's to get excited about? But there you have it. I think the structure of the universe is like a jigsaw puzzle. All the pieces are necessary to complete the whole picture. Any one piece in isolation may seem superfluous, but it's unique characteristics are essential... [More]

So, if only gauge bosons interact with the Higgs field and gain mass from that field, how do fermions that do not interact with the Higgs field gain mass? The presumption is that they would also couple with the Higgs field. As I understand it, the Higgs mechanism is a theory that provides a clear way of endowing gauge bosons with mass. This mechanism could endow fermions with mass, but there are many different ways this could be done. The simplest of these methods requires an additional coupling parameter (the ``Yukawa''-parameter in the wiki), that would have to be experimentally determined. ... [More]
