Visits from the dead

These series of incidents surprised even an old timer like myself who thought they had seen it all, never a healthy attitude and one that I was to regret. The story begins in a small Norfolk town in 1988. Word had come through to the local spiritualists that a very old and large house, with a later Georgian façade dating from about 1770, and backed onto the river, which was now used as a health club was being haunted by the spirit of a naked lady, the issue led to confusion because the staff who cleaned the club at night all gave differing descriptions, of what they saw, and it did not occur to us that they were seeing different people and from different time zones. A crisis occurred when the cleaning team refused to go in and carry out their tasks until the naked lady and co. were evicted.

We had a full and experienced rescue circle led by an 85 year old trance medium named Minnie, a colleague of the famous Helen Duncan. She was a good old fashioned Scottish medium who was born into the spiritualist traditions. Our operations team, comprising eight of us, in a large upstairs room, bare and scrubbed clean, positioned our chairs into a circle, and waited for Minnie’s spirit guide to speak through her, and give directions. To an onlooker it would have been a strange sight, this frail old lady with her Scottish accent, suddenly speaking in the deep male voice of a red Indian. “Do not try this at home”.
Our main concern was to establish contact with the naked lady, but to our surprise a whole variety of characters came and spoke through our medium, there were children, men, and the wife of a cruel man that owned the house when it was used by the smugglers gangs, she turned to the chap that looked after the horses, in desperation for a little affection, we listened in horror as the house master came back to find his wife, chase her and hack her to pieces with a sword, her screams lived with us all for some time. The sheer number of souls trapped in time, some, still in the agonies of life in very difficult ages, and the stories that tumbled out gave real insights into the complications of the lives they lived. Minnie the mediums face would take on the look of each of these spirit people, as they entered and spoke through her. They communicated a variety of stories, some happy some tragic, most just very sad.

Those who had stolen food had the common belief that they would be damned by the church and there was no forgiveness, this shocked me somewhat, we gave them the joy of being informed the church had no authority to override both god and individual karma. Eventually the spirit guide said the mediums health would be at risk to continue, we had been comforting and exorcising spirits for five hours non stop, and the room in the half light exposed a whole group of shadowy figures surrounding our rescue circle, and the guide said the site had many more needing help, over the years I felt that if houses could speak this one would no doubt shock us, with what it had to say. We were quite confused with the numbers of spirits that were there that night, whether we reached the naked lady or not I do not know, but despite the still, brooding even menacing atmosphere , I know we brought help to many souls that night, to progress on to the place allotted to them.

The health club was very relieved when no more complaints of the “nudist ghost” came in, I thought it perhaps good policy not to tell them of just how many lost souls we had dispatched into the light that night ! That night the large sinister house did speak, the old timbers cracked and Groaned, Cold draughts came from no-where and afterwards, the brooding feeling of menace just evaporated leaving a very happy cleaning team!
