Gerst's timelapse footage is impressive to say the least. Image Credit: YouTube / ESA
Alexander Gerst has created a breathtaking visual record of our planet as seen from space.
The video was put together from more than 12,500 photographs taken during the German astronaut's six-month stay aboard the International Space Station.

"A 4K timelapse showing our planet in motion, from my favorite Earth images taken during the Blue Dot mission," he wrote.

"I wish all of you a merry Christmas! It was a wild year for me, thanks for joining me on this fascinating journey!"

The footage, which is around six minutes long, includes images of the southern lights, cloud formations, oceans, cities lit up at night and lightning storms all viewed from far above.

Great! What kind of computer and monitor do you have to have to watch it in 2160p? Just wondering.

Thats the best ISS onboard cam video I have ever seen. Fascinating. And 106 morons gave it a dislike on YT, thats unbelievable.

It sucks how few green spaces are left without interruption by man. Without roads, power lines, light and noise pollution. This video actually depressed me, it's not beautiful at all. Progress is greed IMO. Sorry to be a Debbie downer but the natural world takes it on the chin.

Reasonable video.

I agree with Atuke this video does point out how serious the extent of overpopulation is. All u can see is lights at night and yet all the land is covered and did you see the amount of explosions going on in that one particular area?

......and did you see the amount of explosions going on in that one particular area? No, there are no explosions but thunderstorms.
