Astronaut releases Earth timelapse video

Gerst's timelapse footage is impressive to say the least. Image Credit: YouTube / ESA The video was put together from more than 12,500 photographs taken during the German astronaut's six-month stay aboard the International Space Station.

"A 4K timelapse showing our planet in motion, from my favorite Earth images taken during the Blue Dot mission," he wrote.

"I wish all of you a merry Christmas! It was a wild year for me, thanks for joining me on this fascinating journey!"

The footage, which is around six minutes long, includes images of the southern lights, cloud formations, oceans, cities lit up at night and lightning storms all viewed from far above.
