Jurassic World dinosaurs savaged by experts

Palaeontologists have been quick to point out the flaws in this summer's follow-up to Jurassic Park.
While the latest movie in the popular franchise has been generally well received by audiences and movie critics alike, scientists who work on piecing together real world dinosaurs have been left less than impressed by some of the design decisions that went in to their on-screen counterparts.

The carnivorous velociraptors for instance, which have been portrayed as having the same smooth scales as their Jurassic Park predecessors, failed to be updated to take in to account the fact that in real-life the species would have most likely sported a plumage of colorful feathers.

"Nevermind all those fossils that demonstrate the presence of feathering in all birdlike dinosaurs, or the bony feather attachment knobs present on the arm of velociraptor," said author Darren Naish.

"Judging from the trailers, Jurassic World has opted to stick with scaly-skinned raptors, scientific advancement be damned."
Similar criticism has also been leveled at the pterosaurs in the movie which should have been more furry and were too small to have been able to pick people up off the ground.

Even the seagoing mosasaur was criticized on the basis that it should have been more cumbersome.

"Sadly, the dinosaurs in Jurassic World have not been updated with any new information from the 1990s or 2000s or 2010s, and indeed in a few cases are less accurate than in the original movie," said paleontologist Thomas R. Holtz, Jr. of the University of Maryland.

These few scientific inaccuracies however are unlikely to have much of an effect on the film's popularity which remains on course to see it become one of this year's top cinema releases.

I haven't seen it yet but I have yet to hear it's as good as the original. I mean the first one is an all-time epic movie. Hard to believe that was '93 and the CGI and animatronics beats most modern movies. Of course Stan Winston and Steven Spielberg were a team....they spared no expense. They definitely hammered that point home, no expense was spared for Jurassic Park.

Yeah it is just a movie, I hardly think that Hollywood is about to become the bastion of Paleontological thinking any time soon. But as already pointed it, there are an alarming number of people out there who derive their scientific knowledge from such productions. Perhaps, dare I say, they have an obligation to be a little more accurate? Lol, way to pass the buck there. Don't the moviegoers have an obligation to themselves to seek out knowledge instead of blindingly trusting obvious fiction to get their 'scientific knowledge'?

It's for entertainment! If someone is going to watch a film and think it's real more fool them It's for entertainment! If someone is going to watch a film and think it's real more fool them It's for entertainment! If someone is going to watch a film and think it's real more fool them

Saw Jurassic World today. Agree with the earlier points about it being way better than Jurassic Park 2 and 3. Still like the original the most, with the endearing characters, whom I've watched over and over again, give those awesome looks and say those oh so memorable lines. Jurassic World's characters aren't as cool, and many times look plain, bored and straight-faced, which is unfortunate, given the amazing effects in this movie. As far as the dinos not being how they actually were in real-life, agree with everyone else that it was explained in the movie, they're manufactured "new" dinos, an... [More]

Its FAKE people! Stop with trying to have movies being "accurate." Its silly and a waste of time.

I think part of the disappointment comes from the first movie making an effort to fit with what was known at the time, excluding things needed for plot. I'm more disappointed with the shift from heavier focus on practical effects to digital. Might explain why the reactions of the actors seemed subdued.

I thought it was a good movie and had the same feel as the first one. I was slightly disappointed with the indominus rex. For some reason I expected something different. Still I enjoyed it.

The only thing that irks me is that this movie went backwards in terms of accuracy. Feathered Raptors (the males in JP3) and straight-taled Stegosaurs were already in the previous movies. At least keep those aspects ... the rest makes sense in the JP continuity.

Actually, this was touched on -briefly- in the movie. They said that they had engineered the dinosaurs to look more like what the tourists wanted. I personally would have been upset if they HAD tried to throw feathers all over the Jurassic Park of my childhood

They also explained in the movie that they used DNA from other animals to fill in holes so the dinosaurs dont look exactly like they would have
