The unfortunate woman ended up needing to be rescued after reaching into the toilet to grab her dropped phone.
The woman, whose name has not been disclosed, had been at the top of Mount Walker in the Olympic National Forest, Washington State when she needed to use the facilities.
Unfortunately, however, while using the vault toilet ( a non-flush lavatory which consists of a shaft leading to a sealed container buried underground ), she accidentally dropped her mobile phone.
Desperate to retrieve it, she succeeded in removing the toilet seat and tried to use a dog lead to reach for it, but ended up losing her balance and falling in head first, resulting in her becoming trapped inside, unable to get back out.
Luckily she was able to locate her phone in the fetid gloom and call the emergency services.
Thanks to the help of the local fire department she emerged from her ordeal uninjured, however she was advised to seek a medical checkup due to her exposure to human waste.
"I've been doing this for 40 years, and that was a first," said fire chief Tim Manly.
