The image is part of a series of photographs taken of a strange, illuminated sphere-shaped object spotted over the country.
News outlets this week have picked up on the case of Edie Meireles - a UFO researcher and author who in 2011 claimed to have photographed a spherical object in the sky over Brazil.

The images, which were later posted up by Meireles on social media, were snapped on a hiking trail on the way to a remote waterfall in Chapada Diamantina National Park.

In one image, the object - which appears dark in color but with several lights around its lower half - can be seen over Meireles' shoulder, while in another it can be seen on its own in the sky.

The case has even become associated with an alleged military presence in the area, with Meireles himself reportedly being threatened and even interrogated as a result of what he had witnessed.

During one incident that he recalled back in 2016, he claimed to have suffered multiple injuries - including fractured ribs and a perforated lung - that had seen him end up in hospital for almost two weeks.

"I was hospitalized for 12 days at the Chapada Regional Hospital, in Seabra-Ba, my medical history is there for anyone who wants to investigate," he said at the time.
He is also credited with writing a Reddit post about one of his encounters with a UFO.

"I got out of the car and photographed," he wrote.

"It was an indescribable wonderful emotion to have photographed a UFO so clearly visible."

"About 40 minutes later, still on the road, my car turned off, I braked, I tried to turn the key and nothing, absolutely nothing. I saw a light on the hood and I looked up and there was a UFO standing on top of my car, I opened the door and ran. I even stopped to take a selfie with them."

"My car was towed by a tractor the next day, it burned all electrical parts."

As things stand, both Meireles' photographs and stories remain a topic of controversy and debate, with some believing that his encounters are genuine and others dismissing the whole thing as little more than a hoax.

Very much in agreement with you and I have been saying the same thing in an number of threads. I don't even consider this to be skepticism when one tries to dismiss everything and everyone because of their worldview. And don't forget to visit the threads and put lots of likes in the posts ?

Again in agreement with you. I don't know if you have read my sighting for which I dedicated a thread in the sightings forum. It's worth having a look at. It's about a UFO. As for Brazil they have had a long history with UFOs and paranormal events.

The scientific method is what it is. I think it would be more rewarding to have evidence that passed the peer review process... than to just walk around believing that a UFO is piloted by ET... because no one could explain to me what it was.

As if the UFO phenomenon is a scientific subject. We know that is not part of the mainstream academia so what you are saying cannot be applied to UFOs (at least at this moment in time).

Everyone's all for the scientific method. But when the scientific method cannot prove or disprove something we are left with the question 'all things considered, what is most reasonable to believe?'.

True... and that is why Im extremely surprised that some people are jumping to the most unlikely explanation first. Some wont even entertain the idea that their favorite UFO can have a mundane explanation. Its like they feel chosen or special (in the know) in some way... and they dont want that feeling to go away. The absolute shock, denial and sadness that washes over those poor zaps in the TV show Alien Encounters : Fact or Fiction... when their UFO is debunked as Starlink, ISS or somehting else more down to Earth. That analysis of debris from Roswell episode was epic. ?  The guy held on t... [More]
