The research initiative will study the phenomenon of young children recalling details of their past lives.
Set to be launched by the University of Virginia's Division of Perceptual Studies (DOPS), the new program is backed by $750,000 of funding and is supported by several organizations including the BIAL Foundation, The Dreamery Foundation and the Philip B. Rothenberg Research Fund.

According to the press release, the research will "employ state-of-the-art neuroimaging and contemporary research methodologies" to find out why some children seem to possess memories associated with their past lives.

The study will be headed up by Dr. Marieta Pehlivanova and Dr. Philip Cozzolino.

"This expanded research program marks a new chapter in our scientific investigation of children's past-life memories," said Dr. Pehlivanova.
"By combining insights from our extensive case collection with modern neuroscientific methods, we aim to understand the cognitive, neurophysiological and environmental factors that may contribute to these experiences."

The study will look at two potential mechanisms through which memories of alleged past lives manifest in some children - memory and trauma - as well as new ways to identify and study such cases.

"This research aims to bridge the gap between these compelling cases and mainstream science," the press release states.

"The public presentation and dissemination of this work, at conferences and in peer-reviewed scientific journals, will contribute to our understanding of consciousness, memory and human experience."

As I said, the spaghetti monster has superior explanatory power to this.  This will always be the case until you can talk about good evidence, which you can't/don't, all roads lead to your 'judgment'.   Yes, there is often great consistency among people who belong to a specific religion, that's why it's a 'religion'.  There is even greater consistency among Christians that Jesus was resurrected, and there's lots more of them.  And Vedic mythology is not really that compatible with Christianity. Which without evidence is why I refer to your judgment as mere 'faith'.

We all know we are related if you go back far enough, but that is not relevant in this discussion where children remember lives from decades ago of someone that has had no genetic connection with them after the events  remembered. Fine, everyone accepts that possibility, but for children to believe to have been real people from the recent past with accurate details not reasonably ever encountered through normal channels of information, then we have something to be studied and suggesting new understandings.

Reasoning with all things considered is the best tool we have got in these areas. And the more informed and neutral the better. And onto the side details you bring up, I see Christianity as a positive thing too in its more liberal interpretations. My reasoned position is that the east (India) has the understandings that reach the deepest into the nature of reality.

Why do the memories have to be of real people?  And can that even be proven?  Maybe these memories came from a television program?  Listening to someone tell a story, then dreaming of the people and then remembering the dream as though it actually happened?   I think it's impossible to know where many of our thoughts come from.  But then, I am looking for proof in a world where no such proof can exist.

We...you, I and others...live in a separate reality from PG.  Our existence, our thoughts, every aspect of life exists on 'the physical' plane.  For PG and others, there is another plane which is just as real as the physical.  In the physical world, there is proof to explain the physical world.  There is no such proof in the metaphysical world.  As such it is a world of illusion, where the proof that the illusions are real is found in the sheer number of those reporting the illusion.   It's difficult to carry on a real, meaningful conversation therefore, because we are grounded in 'the ... Sure, we all consider those explanations. But tell me how they can explain the stronger cases? Shanti Devi was born in Delhi, India.[1] As a young girl, she began to claim that she remembered details of a past life. According to these accounts, when she was about four years old, she told her parents that her real home was in Mathura where her husband lived, about 145km from her home in Delhi. Discouraged by her parents, she fled from home at the age of six, attempting to reach Mathura. Back home, she unequivocally stated in school that she was married and had died ten days after giving bi... [More]

I recently read a story about a kid who remembered the past life of a Hollywood producer from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Many details of that producer's life could not be found on the internet. Also, his real age at the time he died was wrongly presented in the media, and the kid knew the exact age when that person died. That's a fascinating topic. Do you know any good books on this matter? I know that some psychiatrists wrote about it.

Thanks for this, it is fascinating how ancient knowledge continues to resurface. Reincarnation is real, we have been here indeed many more times than we can remember. stuck in the meaningless cycle of the wheel of Samsara, much like on the Myth of Sisyphus, going back up a mountain and being told we did it wrong, for them to send us back the down mountain to do it all again without knowing what we did in the first place. I believe all humans that truly wish so, have the natural ability to liberate themselves from this meaningless cycle. I have had personal experiences with visitors from beyond... [More]
