Is there dark matter around the Earth ?

New research suggests that the Earth may be heavier than believed due to the presence of dark matter.
Dark matter is a theoretical type of matter that is believed to make up a large percentage of the mass of the universe. It can't be observed directly and there is no guarantee that it actually exists at all, but nonetheless this enigmatic material has been a staple of cosmological science for years.
Recent research has suggested that dark matter might not only exist out in space but may actually be present around our own planet as well. In 2009, scientists at Princeton's Institute of Advanced Studies were investigating anomalous changes in the speeds of space probes in orbit around the Earth and theorized that this could be down to the presence of dark matter.

More recently, Ben Harris of the University of Texas conducted similar research to discover anomalies in the Earth's mass. His findings indicated that there could be a band of dark matter around the Earth's equator measuring 45,000 miles wide and 120 miles thick.

So it's dark because we don't know what it is or if it even exists. So there might even be a Dark Marmite! . god, i bloody hope so!! .

. Personally I think it's just the Universe's Overlord (who happens to be a giant pinkish unicorn) messing with our heads. . s**t- that was my theory too! if we both reached that conclusion independently (based on observation of course...) then it MUST be true! (do Nobel split prizes?! if not, let's toss for it....) :-)

Amazing stuff , the passage from the Bible suits very well! According to the latest researches, dark matter does keep galaxies together and planets in an exact accurate balancing act. Without dark matter, space as we know wouldn't exists. Our known universe seems to be a bubble filled with gel where planets, galaxies and stars are moving precisely in traces created insight this gel. Dark matter has mass , i won't argue it, therefore it must have energy, a huge energy i shall say. If i have to refer back ro the Bible i would say that God and angels often are described as a very powerful energie... [More]

Considering the theory of light being the fastest most constant thing in the universe has been debunked, the same theories surrounding dark matter and energy will also be seen to be false. They have found neutrinos moving faster than light and it won't be long before they discover there are many energies in this universe much faster than light and that will include dark matter movement and the energy it expresses. Dark matter and dark energy may actually be forms from other dimensional realties, interacting with our own 3 dimensional one and this force creates what we call gravity. It's the mo... [More]

Good to see you too! I'm amazed I managed a coherent post given how hung over I am.... Ugh...I am not even going to ask Cheers, Badeskov

In fact dark matter is what keeps and regulates planets and galaxies staying together and stable. If it exists then possibly yes. Maybe we simply don't know how gravity works on very small or very large scales.

The dark matter problem will be solved, I would say the odds are 99.999% in favor, by our finding out what it is. It may be several different things, which would help understand some of the puzzles. That the explanation will require a revision of our theory of gravitation is much less likely.

That the explanation will require a revision of our theory of gravitation is much less likely. Bearing in mind we dont have an experimentally verfied quantum theory of gravity then our present theories of gravitation will have to be revised at some point. We already know that neither works at very small distances. I'm expecting a quantum theory of gravity (when discovered and tested) to come into p... [More]

Emphasis mine: No "they" haven't, the experiment that you refer to was found to have connectivity errors in the measurement detectors giving a False Positive for FTL Neutrinos. They have found neutrinos moving faster than light, it may be a fault in the connections causing it, but then again it may not, as they are still doing tests. Most discoveries tend to come from misunderstood or mistakes in the experiment, they always lead to different investigations opening up more understanding and in most cases, directions of research. It's those deeply in denial who always reject outright, what doesn... [More]
