Space agencies plan Europa and Jupiter mission

NASA and the European Space Agency have drawn up plans for a mission to Jupiter and Europa in 2020.
One of the main focuses of the mission will be to determine whether Europa has the ingredients for life, if so then another mission may be sent in the future to actively seek out signs of life on Jupiter's icy moon.
The US and European space agencies have drawn up plans for a major space mission to the Jupiter system, to launch in 2020, a talking point at last week's Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in Texas. The Europa-Jupiter System Mission will focus on Jupiter's icy satellites Europa and Ganymede, investigating their chemistry and geology.

Are they going to bore through the ice and look for life in the Europan ocean? I've been waiting for them to do it for years and I seriously hope they get around to it in my lifetime, because the discovery of extraterrestrial life would, for me, be one of the most spectacular things that could ever happen...

Are they going to bore through the ice and look for life in the Europan ocean? Not on this mission. These are purely orbiters. A landing mission is still some way off.

Probes bring back a ton of info for each dollar spent...it will be decades before we will ever be able to send a person to Jupiter; in the meantime sending probes allows us to learn everything we can in the meantime. Otherwise we would just be sitting around waiting to get the chance to travel there...

Otherwise we would just be sitting around waiting to get the chance to travel there... sending a person to jupiter or any of it's moons right now is problematic due to the radation that jupiter produces and the radation that comes in from the sun and gets stuck in its van allen belts. althought two of it's moons also have van allen belts.
