Doctor claims he can turn brown eyes blue

Dr Gregg Homer claims that his laser based Lumineyes technology can turn brown eyes blue permanently.

The treatment works by removing the brown pigment from the top layer of the iris, slowly revealing the blue colour underneath over a period of several weeks. Clinical trials are still underway however it is believed that the procedure will be commercially available in the United States within the next 18 months.

"'A blue eye is not opaque, you can see deeply into it, while a brown eye is very opaque. I think there is something very meaningful about this idea of having open windows to the soul," said Dr. Homer.

So what's wrong with brown eyes in the first place? Absolutely nothing as far as I can see. (and I say this as a blue eyed person) I don't know if this applies to persons whose eyes are made blue artificially, but naturally blue eyed people have a lower threshold for pain. Just something to think about. . . hhmmmmm.... I don't know about that, Bison. I have blue eyes and a very high tolerance of pain. I've heard and read this for years. It turned out to be surprisingly difficult to pin down any research bearing on eye color and pain sensitivity. It's been established that red headed persons are more sensitive to certain kinds of pain, and of course they tend to have the lighter eye colors. This is owing to a mutation in melanin metabolism, melanin being the brown pigment responsible for darker hair, eye, and skin color. Melanin production is limited by the mutation. I had dark brown eyes mostof my life. 8 years ago they began to change and now are mostly a light blue from the outside to nearly the pupils, which have an uneven ring of hazel around them. I would say it must be possible to alter the irises without to much damage to vision, that I have noticed, so maybe he is using a similar if accelerated method much like what caused myeyes to change colors. If it is safe, my sister will likely be waiting in line for a chance to be blue eyes. She has had blue contacts for a long time. Mark

I always dreamed about blue eyes :-) about pain...hmm im brown (not black) and trust me...I feel pain, and when im sick my gf tells me Im a big whiner (I have the bad habit to go tragic, I almost see the white light with the flu ;-) ).

I am wondering if there would seriously be a market for this ,would people honestly want to subject themselves to several "treatments" and the possible risks of eye damage etc just for a colour change ? really ? ..I just can't see the point and find it hard to believe that anyone cares about the colour of their eyes THAT much...or maybe i'm naive
