If you think you are having a bad day, spare a thought for this unfortunate metro commuter in Istanbul.
The incident, which reportedly took place on February 27th in the Turkish city's Ayazaga Metro station, involved Mehmet Ali Erik - a commuter who had been navigating the crowds during rush hour.
Things would soon take a turn for the worse however when, upon stepping on to one of the escalators, Mehmet found himself falling in to a large hole that had suddenly opened up beneath his feet.
Shocked onlookers stopped and stared in horror as the escalator ground to a halt, trapping Mehmet inside. According to reports, it took firefighters around an hour to free him from the mechanism.
He was later treated in hospital for a fractured arm but was fortunately otherwise unscathed.
My roommate has a fear of escalators. Years ago on a trip to Denver, Colorado we stopped at a mall to look around. 2 stories, escalators. She was petrified going up, and it took a lot of coaching from me to get her to take that "first step" She finally did, and unbeknownst to us, there was a group of school kids watching this whole event transpire, seriously, over several minutes. When she finally made that step onto the escalator they started clapping !!! Precious! Never will forget that!
Yes, the difficulty of overcoming fear is something we can all understand from personal experience, and heartily honor, when successfully accomplished by another.
