An 'out there' new study has put forward the notion that UFOs are piloted by secretive, highly advanced Earth-based beings.
The notion that UFOs might be evidence of visitors from outer space is certainly nothing new, but there is another potential explanation for the UFO phenomenon that is far less widely circulated.
This theory, which is the subject of a new paper by researchers from both Harvard and Montana Technological University, suggests that UFOs are piloted by so-called cryptoterrestrials - which are essentially a race of highly advanced beings that are actually from Earth rather than from space.
These beings have allegedly been around for as long as human civilization itself and choose to hide in inaccessible locations such as inside volcanos, at the bottom of the sea or even on the Moon.
The name 'cryptoterrestrial' implies that, like the Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot, these are 'cryptids' - entities that are unknown to science and which remain hidden from sight and evade discovery.
They are also said to be in possession of advanced technology, hence their association with UFOs.
According to the study's authors, there is a 10% chance of this theory being true.
They also admit, however, that the whole idea is a bit of a hard sell.
"Although this idea is likely to be regarded skeptically by most scientists, such are the nature of some UAP that we argue this possibility should not be summarily dismissed," the authors wrote.
As things stand, however, there's not much in the way of evidence to support the idea that there is a race of super-intelligent, Earth-dwelling humanoids flying around in UFOs.
In all likelihood, this is one theory that's going to require some pretty convincing proof in order to be taken seriously.
