Holes in cotton clothing

Week of 20th June, I purchased a really nice designer label cotton shirt and cotton trousers by Pringle and a t-shirt from 3 different charity shops (2nd-hand UK). I was pretty pleased with a whole new outfit. I put them on on the 27th June first week of Wimbledon. It was next day a friend came around I showed him my new shirt and noticed that there were 3 holes in the left bottom front (about size of a pencil diam). I was puzzled as to the cause, my friend joked that moths have attacked you, I noted that moths only eat wool. To cut a long story short, by the end of the week by progressive increments I sprouted 25 holes on my shirt 5 on t-shirt and 14 on my trousers. I spent the week watching Wimbledon and I did not do anything that would damage my clothing ( one detail a couple of the holes went over the nylon stitching of the shirt and that was not affected. ) I have wracked my mind as to what I might have done. My new outfit looks like I have stood in front of a shot gun !

As I said it is a pretty mundane boring subject matter I am absolutely perplexed. And the harsh reality is there are my new clothes ruined I am scientific atheist with no interest in the mystical or supernatural.
