World population to reach 9.7 billion by 2050

How big a population can modern society cope with ? Image Credit: sxc.hu
The UN's latest estimates indicate that the Earth's population will grow even faster than expected.
It's no secret that the number of people on our planet is growing at an alarming rate - so much so that by the turn of the next century we could be looking at a population in excess of 11.2 billion.

New predictions released by the United Nations this week have shown that previous estimates are likely to be exceeded by at least 150 million within the next few decades.

The populations of Africa and Asia in particular are expected to see the biggest increases while overall the most significant factor contributing to the problem is that people are living longer.
Based on global averages people born today are expected to live until the age of 70, but as the years go on this life expectancy will improve significantly with people born in the year 2100 being expected to live for an average of 83 years.

As populations increase however so too does the need for food and clean water - something that will undoubtedly lead to shortages of both, especially in developing countries.

"There is an 80% probability that the population of the world will be between 8.4 and 8.6 billion in 2030, between 9.4 and 10 billion in 2050 and between 10 and 12.5 billion in 2100," the report states.

I think the plan is to get rid of the family gardens/farms. Eventually, the rural populace will be encouraged to move into the "stack and pack" cities of the mega-regions. (Encouraged by changing real estate laws ... like no real estate inheritance ... exorbitant prices on all real estate ... ridiculous gas price to discourage commuting... taxes for mileage ... high priced toll roads.) Here's a map of the mega-regions of the US. http://www.america20...egaregions.html It has already happened. The people living in urban centers already far outnumber those living in rural locations. Then when the... [More]

It has already happened. The people living in urban centers already far outnumber those living in rural locations. Then when the State has a vote, the majority of people living in the city always win the legislators/legislation that they want. Here in Oregon, it is the very small county of Multnoma County that ultimately decides most State votes. It is only about 450 square miles, but is home to almost a quarter of the states people. And votes almost exclusively Liberal Democrat. That is the main reason why Oregon is viewed as Liberal, that one county. The other 90% of the State ranges from 50... [More]

To everyone who suggested starving people to death to stop the population growth , why not volunteer to starve yourself and your family to death . I am sure some of you who suggested the death by starvation would have children and I can imagine your outrage if I suggested your children are the first to be starved to death so they wont reproduce . I won't name and shame the people who suggested starvation as a population control mechanism , but I hope you look within yourselves and imagine starving your children to death so the population can be controlled . I would rather live in an over popul... [More]

I But seriously, I don't remember anyone advocating starving people to stop population growth. Starvation is usually a consequence of war in which one side blockades food to the other side. Read the first page in this thread. It might refresh your memory.

I Read the first page in this thread. It might refresh your memory. I did. I saw a reference to pigeons that might be taken that way. And I saw several comments on withholding medical care. But the Republicans are already trying to do that. This is just people talking, but how many votes have we had to repeal Obamacare? And that's a direct action. I see your point, though. Some of those comments weren't very nice. Doug P.S.: I'll believe the Republicans are serious about fiscal policy when they vote against going to war because it's too expensive. Doug

Close down the hospitals and stop saving lives and the number will soon come down. I reckon we can get this down to a couple of thousand if we stop selling food too. Stop feeding and vaccinating them since death from starvation and disease seems to be the only kind of birth control they, and some religious people, recognize. If they are going to keep having kids like its 1899 let them live like its 1899. I figured I would quote it if you refused to acknowledge it. Oh look...2 direct references that don't have anything to do with pigeons (although that one is pretty obvious too). But you got so... [More]

We need not plan to impose famine, simply refusing to plan for a further 3 billion people will do the work for us. I think its just about avoidable and that certainly would be my desired outcome, but I have my doubts that there is any serious will in a world dominated by ideological solutions rather than empirical ones. The big tech companies need to figure out how to download a person into a computer... And then ask for volunteers. Half the human race would probably jack into the Virtual World and basically disappear as far as their Footprint is concerned.

Computers have a carbon footprint and what you suggest is likely to remain SI-Fi for the foreseeable future. Br Cornelius

But you got some sick burns in on Republicans, so there's that. Guilty as charged. Doug
