While the MoD's official stance has long been that there is no evidence to support the notion that UFOs are extraterrestrial in origin, Pope himself reached a very different conclusion - instead maintaining that conventional explanations could not always be found for such sightings.
The MoD's UFO desk was officially discontinued in 2009.
After leaving the role, Pope went on to write several books on the topic of UFOs and continues to remain a prominent figure in the field, having made many TV and radio appearances over the years.
In this most recent interview, which was conducted by Jazz Shaw of HotAir, Pope discusses the topic of government secrecy in relation to a number of well-known UFO incidents including the infamous Rendlesham Forest case which saw a number of US servicemen encounter an unknown object outside RAF Woodbridge in December 1980.

The former UFO investigator for the Ministry of Defense recently spoke out in an interview with Jazz Shaw.
One of the most prominent figures in the field of UFO research, Nick Pope famously worked for the British Ministry of Defense from 1991 to 1994 during which time he was tasked with investigating reports of unidentified flying objects to determine whether or not they posed a risk to national security.While the MoD's official stance has long been that there is no evidence to support the notion that UFOs are extraterrestrial in origin, Pope himself reached a very different conclusion - instead maintaining that conventional explanations could not always be found for such sightings.
