A pigeon carrying a 'coded message' was recently captured by authorities in India on suspicion of spying.
According to reports, the hapless pigeon was picked up by villagers in the Jammu and Kashmir region along the International Border (IB) with Pakistan before being handed over to the police.

Authorities became suspicious after an encoded message was found in a ring around its leg.

The region itself is heavily disputed and claimed by both India and Pakistan, which explains why the local police would exercise such suspicion over something as simple as a pigeon.

As it turns out however, the avian 'spy' was owned by a Pakistani man named Habib Ullah who reported that it had inadvertently flown over the border.
He claimed that he owned 12 pigeons and that the 'coded message' was in fact his phone number.

According to local media, the bird itself has since been released by police on the basis that it was carrying 'nothing suspicious'.

"I believe the 'spy pigeon' has been released," the region's former chief minister Omar Abdullah wrote on Twitter. "Was there prisoner exchange or was it just allowed to fly?"

"Perhaps it's a double agent now!"

Wrong cartoon. While we're at it, that comment about how " a coded ring tagged to the captured pigeon’s body is a cause for concern as migratory birds don’t have such rings.” caught my attention. Have the Indians never heard of bird banding?

Pink doesn't exactly seem like an unobtrusive color for a spy pigeon either.
