Could our universe be an alien science experiment ?

Did someone 'make' our universe ? Image Credit: Casey Reed - Penn State University
Scientists have speculated over the possibility that our entire universe may have been created in a laboratory.
There is so much we don't understand about the universe and the nature of existence that even attempting to comprehend how anything actually exists at all is enough to make your head hurt.

While the currently accepted model for the birth of the universe is the Big Bang, we still don't know much of anything about what was around before that, or what triggered the expansion in the first place.

Could the universe be caught in an endless cycle of expansion and contraction ? Is our universe one of a multitude of other universes in an overarching multiverse ? We just don't know.

In a recent article, Harvard University astronomer Avi Loeb puts forward another possibility - one that doesn't exactly help to explain the nature of reality, but that certainly makes for an interesting thought exercise.
What if the universe was actually created by advanced extraterrestrial beings in a laboratory ?

For this to be true, of course, there would need to be some other universe of which our universe is a part or to which it is connected - one in which these alien scientists live and work. It is also likely that if this were true, they would have created numerous other universes in the same way.

But then this all begs the question - how did their universe come about ? Rather than solving the question of the origin of our universe, it simply regresses the problem and necessitates an even more complex answer.

It is similar to the common atheist argument concerning the existence of God - if God made our universe, who made God ? At the end of the day, the same questions remain unanswered.

Well, I dont think so. Aliens would not be able to build the Great Pyramids for exemple, let alone the whole universe. The Aliens are overrated.

This doesn't really change anything. And it doesn't make our reality any less real if it were true. Just an interesting theory.

I quite like this idea because its an elegant solution, it seems to make sense on some basic level. But if it came to a vote I would still preferer a real universe, whatever that is.

Because the idea of infinity is impossible for the human mind to truly appreciate. We simply lack the capability for it. It might help if you reframe your idea of what "space" is, though. Space is not a thing, not a force, it is literally the absence of anything. Space is the area where no matter or energy currently exists. It is absence. Where the reaches of matter and energy end, there is absence, and therefore space. In much the same way that cold is not truly a force but a deion for the absence of heat, so too is space a deion for the absence of particles.

I like to learn magic, because if the universe is a simulation/computer game then magic are cheat codes or trainers. Ghost and demons are banned gamers who try to hack themselves back and Angels are admins. Sounds plausible.

simulations or alternative realities?

I think this thread is about simulations, something that a civilization in this reality creates out of components that reside in this reality.   I believe an alternative reality may be defined as separate from the one we are living in currently.  There would be no physical or energy or information exchange between the two.  The concept of bubble universes or branes would be more likely described as an alternate reality. That is my take anyway.  I am not an expert, don't even play one on TV.

This reminds me of a Simpsons episode in which Lisa has a science project and Bart tries to flush them trough the toilet.  Seriously would we even now if we where a lab experiment?

As I see it, a alternate reality is part of this universe. Its basically just a different variation of this one, same law of physics same ecosystem just different events that didnt happen here or it happen but in a different manner ie Hitler was the war. A different universe, a bubble universe as you call it its a different matter. At least on what I was thinking. Anyways, if a civilization, is able to build super super super complex simulations, I think to some extent its safe to call them alternative reality or different realities.

This conversation reminds me of Fraggle Rock, where the creatures in fraggle rock call anything beyond the rock "outer space".  It is all about perspective.
