The animals were found unexpectedly by a woman who happened to be driving past their paddock on Tuesday.
Something or someone has been killing cows in the Oakford suburb of Perth, Western Australia - that is, at least, based on the grisly discovery of 25 deceased bovines in a semi-rural paddock in the area.
The alarm was raised when a woman who had been driving past the field on her way to feed her horses noticed the cows lying motionless on the ground.
The RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is now understood to be conducting an investigation into exactly what might have been responsible for their deaths.
According to reports, the owner of the property had been away, but his son had told reporters that the cows had all been suffering from pneumonia and that a recent spell of particularly wet weather had made it difficult to remove their remains from the paddock.
Whether this is actually what happened to the animals, however, remains unclear and the RSPCA has refused to comment on its findings so far as the investigation is still ongoing.
The case has been loosely compared to the discovery of 500 dead horses in New South Wales back in April.
In that instance, though, a police investigation revealed that the animals had been deliberately slaughtered over an extended period of time.
