NASA's Leroy Chiao had a close encounter with something he couldn't explain while flying his seaplane in 2023.
Chiao, who flew on three space shuttle missions and also served aboard the International Space Station for several months as commander of Expedition 10, left NASA in 2005 and has since become a successful entrepreneur, motivational speaker and engineering consultant in the private sector.
At the time the sighting took place, he had been flying his private four-seat seaplane over Texas when he observed what he described as two "perfectly smooth" spheres at an altitude of around 9,000ft.
The spheres were situated approximately 20 feet away from him and were 3ft in diameter.
"I didn't see any visible means of propulsion, so I don't know what it would be," he told the New York Post in an interview. "You gotta have a jet engine or a propeller or something."
"There was nothing around me other than the panhandle of Texas at nine thousand feet on this instrument flight plan and just suddenly these things appeared."
"They were moving about the same speed as I was in the opposite direction. About 100-150 mph."
"If an airplane flew by me that fast, I'd feel its wake, it would have disturbed the air around my airplane."
Chiao noted that the objects resembled one that he'd seen in an image captured on camera over Iraq that had been investigated by the Pentagon's All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO).
"That's what it made me think of," he added. "I wonder, 'Gosh, I wonder if this is the same thing.'"
You can hear Chiao describe his encounter in the below news segment about the recent drone phenomenon.
Airspeed is relative to the wind/air. Balloons are pushed by the wind and therefore have zero airspeed. We're not talking tethered balloons at the altitude where pilots are reporting them.
Ah, the old mylar balloon excuse. Mylar balloons have seams, therefore they aren't really round.plus at 11,000 ft.there is less air pressure which would make the balloon look slightly deflated. The testimony is from, an astronaut/pilot. Are you lot going to jump on him as a poor witness now?
It could be a weather balloon. Keep in mind he only saw the object for 1 second, "it happened so quick there wasn't even a chance to get scared." Also, he saw it 20 feet from the left side of his plane, right underneath (his airplane). From his perspective, he would only see the balloon's top part, which would look spherical. Â
I'd seen one of these silver balls flying thru the sky folding space as it travelled back in 1988, haven't heard of the silver ball reappearance since. Don't worry it's just a Grey Patrol Ship. It's what sparked my abduction experiences, so cool.
Thats usually the case with all these believers - Ignorance. Thats ok I guess, we cant be experts on everything... but there is nothing more frustrating when debating someone that has perfected willful ignorance.  Willful ignorance is the state and practice of ignoring any sensory input that appears to contradict one's inner model of reality. At heart, it is almost certainly driven by confirmation bias and/or avoidance of cognitive dissonance. https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Willful_ignorance
