So, I'll try to keep this as short as possible. Me and my younger cousin, (name omitted), often like spending the night down at my grandma's house, which is only a few miles away from his home.

One particular night, we were already asleep, when we heard a four-wheeler go by our window. At first, we thought that we were just hearing things. But then it happened again.
I thought that one of my grandfather's friends had stolen a four-wheeler from the shed, and was going on a joy ride. But then we realized, all of his friends had there own four-wheelers.

So, the next morning, we went and checked out the shed. We found some tire tracks that led towards the house, but we eventually lost them.

To this day, we still don't know what happened.

You were already asleep when you heard it go past - highly improbable. Perhaps some one rode past?

They say "they'll try to keep this as short as possible", but perhaps it's a little too short to be able to make much of. Might it be too prosaic to suggest that someone else might have been riding past on their own vehicle?

Did they ask their granddad or if anyone else in the house knew or heard the 4x4?

I find it really strange that your first thought was that you granddad's friends STOLE the car originally? I'm also wondering when you reference to your cousin and saying that you both thought you were hearing things, does this mean you had a conversation before the 2nd time you heard the noise? Or was this something you talked about after? If you were asleep as well, how do you know your cousin was awake? I'm very curious to this story.
