The SpaceX CEO is hoping to see a manned mission to Mars happen within the space of just nine years.
Musk, who has plans to eventually build a city on the Red Planet, told attendees at the StartmeupHK Festival in Hong Kong this week that SpaceX was planning to launch a manned mission to Mars within the next decade and announced that he would be unveiling the architecture of a Mars spacecraft at the International Astronautical Conference in Mexico later this year.

"Mars is the next natural step. In fact, it's the only planet we have a shot at establishing a self-sustaining city on," he said.
"Once we do establish such a city, there will be strong forcing function for the improvement of space flight technology that will then enable us to establish colonies elsewhere in the solar system and ultimately extend beyond our solar system."

"It would be exciting and inspiring, and there needs to be things that excite and inspire people."

Imo it would be best to set up a base on the Moon before going to Mars.

Yeah, to be sure. A manned mission to Mars is serious stuff. Not sure what to think about it at this time. I've heard anything from "great job" to "suicide mission" I think it's somewhere in between.

If you research the history of exploration there is always death to follow those in the first batch. Any volunteers for the first rocket.

If you research the history of exploration there is always death to follow those in the first batch. Any volunteers for the first rocket. Funnily enough, I think if the offer was made (and it was serious) there'd be no end of volunteers, almost regardless of the level of risk.
