Loud crash in the night

This story was submitted to the site by Lady Daffodil from Pennsylvania.
It was the summer of 1969. I was 13-going-on-14, and my aunt, uncle, and a couple of cousins were staying with my parents and me for a week or so. After a fun day of swimming in the pool and other stuff, we all went to bed. I don't even remember where they all slept in our tiny 3-bedroom house, but I know that neither cousin shared my little bitty bedroom with me. They must have all been crammed into our guest room.
Now, I know I wasn't asleep when this incident happened, because I was too wound up to go to sleep and we hadn't been in bed that long. I suddenly heard a loud crash in my bedroom closet; it sounded like something made out of metal fell on the floor. The first thing that came to mind was a vacuum cleaner hose (they were made of metal in those days), but there wasn't any vacuum cleaner in my closet. Now a braver kid would have gotten up, turned the light on, and investigated, but no, not cowardly old me! I lay there shaking wondering what the heck had happened and waiting for someone to come in and ask what happened...but no one did. Since we lived in a one-story 3-bedroom house and all the bedrooms were right near each other, there is no way you could not hear such a loud crash, no matter where you were in that house!
The next morning when it was light out, I was braver and got up and looked in my closet...not a thing out of place! I asked everyone if they had heard a loud noise during the night, but nobody had. Either they had all fallen asleep right away and were sleeping VERY deeply, or I was the only one who had heard it.
This has always mystified me, and to this day I haven't come up with an explanation for it aside from it must have been something other-worldly. Has anyone else ever experienced something like this?
