New tech turns radio waves in to electricity

A new energy harvesting technology is capable of powering a device from ambient radio frequency waves.
Known as 'Freevolt', the system was revealed by former British science minister Lord Paul Drayson in the same theater in which Michael Faraday originally delivered his lectures in the 19th century.

By using a multi-band antenna and rectifier ( a battery capable of turning alternating current in to direct current ), the mechanism can absorb energy from several different radio frequency bands and then use it to charge up low-power electronic devices.

"Companies have been researching how to harvest energy from Wi-Fi, cellular and broadcast networks for many years," said Drayson. "But it is difficult because there is only a small amount of energy to harvest."
To demonstrate the technology Drayson set up a loudspeaker in the lecture hall and then used the radio wave energy harnessed from the mobile phones in the audience to power it up.

"The idea isn't too far-fetched - and I'm sure it'll be improved," said antenna technology expert Professor John Batchelor from the University of Kent.

Whether we will ever see a future in which our electronic devices can be charged up without having to be plugged in to an electrical outlet however remains to be seen.

"But it is difficult because there is only a small amount of energy to harvest," he said. So pls expect a charge time of at least 7 weeks (iPhone 6 and similar).

I don't think it will make the power companies and wifi companies very happy. If they can make it work, it well be killed in the courts. Everybody's wants their cut. Free energy from solar has been a uphill battle in the States. Electric robber barons own the government. I think this would have the same fate. Actually, you'd be the first blowing bubbles through your nose: "Waa... Waaa... Waaaa... I have no cell phone/wifi reception... Waa... Waaa..." Install enough "harvesters/gadgets", and you'll be effectively screening wifi signal, with all consequences.

I think you will find that this is from the UK, not the US, so whatever happens to this, it isn't going to have anything to do with who owns the US government. I know it is a a shocking concept, but 95% of the people in the world aren't from the US. In any event the amount of energy you c... [More]

I've been living off an invention like that for a decade. I've been stealing radio waves and loved it

Where I come from the energy companies are actively encouraging people to save energy, because then they can continue to charge people for their energy use, without having to invest in new and expensive powerplants. I think you have hit on a real conspiracy there. Over the last five years I have reduced my energy use by about 15%. Why? Because I am told that I have been destroying the world through my profligate use of energy. However, over the last five years my energy costs have increased by almost 20%. Who has benefitted? I hope the world has benefitted because I certainly haven't!

Well lets face it, it's no worse than being ripped off watching repeats on Tele. Waste of time and energy but we all accept it.

A new energy harvesting technology is capable of powering a device from ambient radio frequency waves. Read More: http://www.unexplain...-to-electricity Okay, now this is awesome and the 'next step' in my own research. I was waiting for somebody to come up with a way to harvest RF and turn it into EM (I knew it could be done the other way around), because I was running out of ideas about how to do this myself. Yes, Tesla started it and I am continuing on the work of Tesla. ...and meanwhile, all I can hear is; 'have you built us that bridge yet?'

So, I was just looking at the RF resonant cavity thruster. https://en.wikipedia...cavity_thruster ...and directional radio waves... According to Newton's third law it is possible. https://www.reddit.c...omments/34cq1b/ NASA are already doing it with the QDrive. What they will never get is this: We KNOW that thrust is being measured, and that it is beyond the range of "noise", and that it is directional according to the device, but we do not know if the cause is thrust actually being generated, or some other factor which makes it appear that way. ....and thereby hangs the sad and sorry tale.
