Why would aliens invade Earth ?

Invasion by hostile aliens has been a theme explored by countless science fiction books and movies for years, but in the real world how likely would it be for an alien race to launch an attack on our planet and for what purpose ?
As far as we understand our planet we enjoy the benefits of habitable eco-systems, fresh water, and a means to produce foods. These things would be the most likely reason for an alien invasion. Assuming that we are not alone in this vast cosmos.

I would like to point out that if aliens were able to travel to earth in a non-century time frame (i.e. manipulation of the very fabric of space) then they would find little use of anything on our planet, the idea of "scarcity" to them would be as alien to them as they are alien to us. Everything we have on earth is found in extreme abundance in the galaxy, it's just that our planet has certain combinations of those basic elements. They would posses a level of technolgy to create vast endless reasources effortlessly from mere astroids and rock. They might be curious in our planets devolopmenta... [More]

The problem when we're trying to understand what alliens would do, is the human brain and human science. 500 years ago we thought the earth was flat. We are just now taking baby steps into space and we really dont have a clue why or how they might come. Not true, there are several evidence that proves the Greeks knew the earth was round (see all articles about the Antikythera artifact circa 600 BCE) which would tend to prove that Homer recited his Iliad and Odyssey long time before the first millennium BCE, and the poor Odysseus navigated the river Oceanus. Sorry to burst your bubble.

I tend to agree with the idea that it would not be an invasion as such, but rather much more of an 'annexation'. Perhaps that wouldn't be so bad - just higher taxes. But as to a higher reason why, we have to assume that our ideas about why they would invade would be alien to them to. Theoretically, it is just as likely that we would be unable to comprehend any of their theology as we would be able to understand and condem. Personally however, I would rather not like to test my theories.

Turn humans into a new pet fad? Can't really see any other reason why they'd come, unless we have something we don't know we even have.

Turn humans into a new pet fad? Can't really see any other reason why they'd come, unless we have something we don't know we even have. If I got pampered and fed like my cats and just lay around a house all day doing sweet nothing except sometimes playing with the toys that are bought for me (our equivalent would be consoles and gadgets etc) then I don't think i would mind tbh. lol

Turn humans into a new pet fad? Can't really see any other reason why they'd come, unless we have something we don't know we even have. See the Dolph Lundgren film 'Darkangel' (also titled I Come in peace!) In it a 'Nordic'looking alien drug dealer kills people with massive overdoses of drugs, which releases brain chemicals highly prized by his race as a narcotic. Thats a likely reason for visiting us and it would explain all the alleged alien experimentation on abductees.

Why can't aliens be exploring their galaxy? If they're able to travel to separate star systems perhaps they want to map their home galaxy, it's what we're trying to do now, albeit on a lesser scale. I bet not even aliens know everything about the universe I agree with that. I don't suppose (unless we do happen to have some sort of mineral reserves that they think imp-ortant enough to go to all the trouble of getting here and all the rest of it), that they'd want to go invading us in a sci-fi style, but they might well be exploring just the same as we do, and that might be what UFOs (some at an...
