Brown Lady

Considered to be one of the most important and convincing ghost photographs ever taken the 'Brown Lady' is thought to be the ghost of Lady Dorothy Townshend who haunts Raynham Hall in Norfolk, England where she would have once lived.

Ghost stories

Tales of ghost sightings have been told from visitors to Rayham Hall from as early as 1835. In one incident Captain Frederick Marryat encountered the ghost along with two nephews of Lord Charles Townshend. They had been walking along a corridor when they came face to face with the apparition of a woman. The Captain raised his pistol and fired at point blank range but the bullet appeared to pass straight through the figure and was later found lodged in the doorway directly behind where the ghost had been seen.

The photograph

The famous photograph was taken in 1936 by an assistant to Indra Shira, a hired photographer who had been brought in to photograph the mansion's interior. Shira was photographing the stairs when he witnessed a vapourous form take shape on the staircase. Upon taking the form of a woman in white the apparition then slowly descended the stairs. Shira's assistant who was with him at the time failed to see anything but snapped a photograph in the direction Shira was pointing. It is widely believed that the photograph is genuine and is one of the most convincing Ghost photographs ever taken.
