Nations express concerns over 'killer robots'

The potential dangers of autonomous weapon systems have been emphasized at a recent UN meeting.
Automated robots capable of identifying and destroying targets without any human intervention are set to become increasingly commonplace in military conflicts around the world, sparking concerns from world leaders over the ethics of having automated platforms make life or death decisions.

At a recent UN meeting in Geneva there was a renewed emphasis from several countries in ensuring that these sophisticated new weapons continue to comply with the Geneva convention.
Spain in particular expressed concerns over the possibility of a new arms race with countries developing increasingly advanced autonomous weapons platforms. Ireland and the Netherlands called for new laws requiring at least some degree of human control over such systems.

Many have even called for an outright ban on the use of autonomous weapons.

"There is a sense of urgency about how we deal with killer robots," the Human Rights Watch group said in a statement. "Technology is racing ahead."

strangely enough, I was thinking about this very same thing in the shower this morning. who do you blame if/when something goes wrong? . until true AI becomes a reality, then robots(?) killing humans should be a huge fuc***g no-no. and when true AI DOES become a reality, it should STILL be a big fu****g no-no. .

I think these people are suffering from terminator syndrome which is the fear of robots taking over the term was created shortly after the second terminator movie but to be honest tech is advancing alot faster nowadays now just about everything is called a smart something smart cars smart phones smart tablets but think we're ok considering all my smart stuff can't even figure out what saying to it when I use voice recognition or voice commands I think these people are suffering from terminator syndrome which is the fear of robots taking over the term was created shortly after the second termin... I have concerns over this too... For one, no matter how thorough the coding is mistakes and misidentification's can be made (just as humans make errors) but what are they going to do arrest the programmer for manslaughter? Secondly, another persons job replaced by a machine. As usual though genuine concern will be bulldozed for what will essentially be the prophet of the manufacturer who will be nowhere where their technology is being used, or abused even.

I think the robot finding and locking onto a target is fine, but a human should ultimately push a button to initiate an attack.

the same thing should apply to self driving cars JC- in the event of a pile-up, who's ultimately responsible? . and how much comfort would that bring the dead.....? . I was talking about this today with a client, I think the most dangerous time will be the transition when automated cars are mixed on the road with human drivers. It is an interesting point though, especially if automated cars cause an overall reduction in traffic accidents who is responsible for any harm that may occur, will it be overlooked as traffic related injuries are down in general?
