Scientists have identified the first ever baby giant squid in specimens fished up off the coast of Japan.
Giant squid are notoriously difficult to observe in the wild and much is still unknown about the species or its life spent hidden within some of the deepest places in the Earth's oceans.

Now however scientists have for the first time revealed the discovery of several baby giant squid specimens that had been sent to cephalopod expert Toshifumi Wada for identification after being caught by fishermen off the coast of Japan back in 2013.

Despite being juveniles the squid are actually larger than the adults of most other squid species.

When fully grown some giant squid can reach a staggering 43ft in length.
