A crucial gene that would have lead to human speech and invention has been identified by scientists.
The gene helps control the development of the part of the brain responsible for higher functions and would have given early man a significant advantage over other primate species over 2.5 million years ago.
Despite humans and chimpanzees separating over 6 million years ago we still share 96% of our genome with them.
By duplicating itself two and a half million years ago the gene could have given early human brains the power of speech and invention, leaving cousins such as chimpanzees behind.
