Can we generate electricity from lava ?

Could lava be a viable source of electricity ? Image Credit: Wiki
The heat generated by molten rock could be harnassed as a highly effective source of electricity.
The idea originated from an accidental encounter with the molten material that took place when scientists working on a geothermal borehole project in Iceland accidentally hit upon a pocket of lava that spewed superheated steam for two years.

This steam, scientists argued, could be harnessed as an effective way to produce electricity.
"Drilling into magma is a very rare occurrence and this is only the second known instance anywhere in the world," said Professor Wilfred Elders of the University of California. "This could lead to a revolution in the energy efficiency of high-temperature geothermal projects in the future."

The team concluded that the steam from the borehole was capable of generating up to 36 MW of electrical power.

yes, obviously ? We can generate electricity from anything that can boil water to produce steam to turn a turbine/generator... like a Nuclear power plant for instance.

Somebody has seen "the Core" too many times.

Yeah. And have you ever heard of "Thermal King" used on refrigerated trucks years ago? Anyway, I personally know one of the co-inventors(Norm Sulenes), and they made millions. I think the patent ran out by now. He is also in a nursing home. The interesting part is that he was also a small-time pilot, and suggested the re-use/retooling of aircraft turbine engines to generate massive amounts of electricity in very high winds, while having very high survivalbility. Such as placed in a hurricane path. He is now too old to persue this, but I thought it was interesting. Anyway, using heat from lava,... [More]

Sure, and we can power a car with coffee beans (they did that in the UK, if I'm not mistaken, took about ten thousand coffee to go an 100 miles..). The thing is, is it efficient? I'm disgusted with all those articles proclaiming all sort of odd ways to power your car (or your house, whatever), most being just stupid experiments worth no value as efficiency is concerned. And what about this infernal hole who has been flaming for 3 decades somewhere in big russia? Couldn't we use it for power too? Schizo
