Has the Hadron Collider disproven ghosts ?

According to Professor Brian Cox, if ghosts existed, CERN's atom smasher should have found them by now.
During a recent segment with Neil deGrasse Tyson on his BBC Radio 4 show 'The Infinite Monkey Cage', Professor Cox - a British physicist well known for presenting science programs in the UK - suggested that the Large Hadron Collider may have actually disproven the existence of ghosts.

Given that spirits are presumably made up entirely of energy, they would almost certainly dissipate due to the second law of thermodynamics which suggests that energy is always lost to heat.

To get around this problem there would need to be some sort of source of incoming energy to keep them going - something that CERN's famed particle accelerator would have found by now.
"If we want some sort of pattern that carries information about our living cells to persist, then we must specify precisely what medium carries that pattern, and how it interacts with the matter particles out of which our bodies are made," said Cox.

"We must, in other words, invent an extension to the Standard Model of Particle Physics that has escaped detection at the Large Hadron Collider. That's almost inconceivable at the energy scales typical of the particle interactions in our bodies."

His comments caught the interest of Tyson who was also appearing on the program.

"If I understand what you just declared, you just asserted that CERN, the European Centre for Nuclear Research, disproved the existence of ghosts," he said, to which Cox agreed.

Physics Smizicks... If our sentient awareness existed after death... Then why do we have bodies and a brain to begin with? We have bodies and a brain because it is the only way to house the intellect...the awareness. Dead is dead.  The proof is everywhere you look.... Ghosts are akin to Voodoo.  All fear based irrational brain chatter.

Sure the electrical and quantum parts of a person can be lost. That is what recycling of matter does. The constituents of long dead creatures are gone, and recycled into the ongoing processes on our planet.

yep  LINK - You Are Drinking Dinosaur Pee Every Day: Here's Why "All the water on Earth has been through a dinosaur kidney," Fisherman tells Marketplace.org. "Every bottle of Evian you drink from is Tyrannosaurus Rex pee. All the water on Earth has been here for 4.5 billion years. It's all toilet-to-tap at some level."

This is all trivial. Cox's statement that the LHC would have detected ghosts by now is not what he believes. He stated that any energy would quickly dissipate from the deceased. His reference to the LHC was him trying make a clever joke. I find this unfortunate because famous scientists shouldn't assume that laypeople get their jokes. Many statements, such as the atheist Einstein's that "God doesn't play dice with the universe", are taken by the public as real statements. That leads many to come to conclusions that the scientists did not mean to suggest.

What are the "quantum parts" of a person?

The chemistry. Atoms interact in quantum ways. I brought this concept forward from another poster that was proposing quantum-woo for the brain. I am simply suggesting that quantum concepts do apply to the brain as do they to any chemical situation.

Great response.  Many would still believe the earth is flat or many scientists would have stopped their own research because of those who disregarded other research.  We are somewhat blind in our current technology and can be considered primitive if we can't fully achieve space flight as we see planes that fly in our skies today.  To assume we have the answer to something that requires so much more research and better technology would make one a fool. I've been near a child who recently lost her father and when that 2 year old child points to an empty area in the house and says "Daddy... [More]

What a bunch of malarky!!!  Ghosts are real and I can prove it!!   1)  What about all those cold spots in my house? 2) What about all those voices I pick up on my voice recorder, you know, the one I keep next to my CB Radio in the windowsill next to the cell phone tower? 3) And what about all those creaky noises I hear in my 50 year old house? 4) Someone explain why my magnetometer goes crazy in my house with it's state of the art, 1960's electrical wiring?!!! 5) Why do I see weird lights when it's dark in my granite block basement?   Some idiot British Physicist thinks he's so smart! Choosing to be open to the possibilities around you does not make someone anything other than a believer. Believing is not the same as reality. People believe in all sorts of untrue things. That's not such a good idea is it? Children say things. We interpret. Maybe we assume that a child's mind works like ours. Maybe we don't. One interpretation of this story is that ghosts exist. Another interpretation is that children play make believe. We notice that many of us grow out of this mode where we see things that go bump in the night. Some don't. If an older person thinks they see something we cor... [More]
