Celebrated physicist Professor Stephen Hawking has said that he believes we may face nuclear armageddon.
Hawking recently answered questions on BBC Radio 4 as part of a programme celebrating his 70th birthday. "I think it is almost certain that a disaster, such as nuclear war or global warming, will befall the earth within a thousands years," he said. "It is essential that we colonise space. I believe that we will eventually establish self-sustaining colonies on Mars, and other bodies in the solar system, although probably not within the next 100 years."
Professor Hawking was answering questions submitted by listeners to BBC Radio 4's Today programme to mark his seventieth birthday. But if man should meet alien life on its journey into space, the consequences for humanity could be grave, Prof Hawking warned.

Stephen Hawkins is in no position to make a stand on anything. A great man needs not to Stand to Stand for Greatness ! In this Mr.Hawkings is indeed a Great man ! and has and will be remembered as such !

He sees the bigger picture, most people don't. The fact is we WILL become extinct if we don't move to other planets because this one won't last forever and resources are drying up faster every day. The problem is the people in power are the short sited ones and only see the money.

The problem is the people in power are the short sited ones and only see the money. I agree in the sense that it is in human nature to colonize and explore, but that we will become extinct due to factors in our control (i.e., not the Sun dying in 5 billion years or an extinction level impact from space) I seriously doubt. Humans are as a species extremely adaptive and inventive, so while our numbers... [More]

we can't just colonize space we don't even know how to overcome infertility in space yet even if you can reach a full term pregnancy, radiation in space causes either extreme deformities or you can give birth to an offspring, but it will be infertile in itself.

We should start with a permnent base on the moon, both to gather experience and technology. Then we can move on other targets, like Mars. But a full scale colonitation is not something we can do right now.

we must become self sustained and not rely on any thing or we will not see the future

I heard someone say once that colonizing space was pointless because if we can't fix our problems here on Earth what's gonna be different out there...
